The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted

Ben Bella Books, Inc. | ISBN 1-932100-66-0 | Author: T. Colin ampbell, Ph.D. | English | PDF | 425 Pages | 5.80 MB

Introduction
THE PUBLIC'S HUNGER for nutrition information never ceases to amaze me, even after devoting my entire working life to conducting experimental research into nutrition and health. Diet books are perennial best-sellers. Almost every popular magazine features nutrition advice, newspapers regularly run articles and TV and radio programs constantly discuss diet and health.
Given the barrage of information, are you confident that you know what you should be doing to improve your health? Should you buy food that is labeled organic to avoid pesticide exposure? Are environmental chemicals a primary cause of cancer? Or is your health "predetermined" by the genes you inherited when you were born? Do carbohydrates really make you fat? Should you be more concerned about the total amount of fat you eat, or just saturated fats and trans-fats? What vitamins, if any, should you be taking? Do you buy foods that are fortified with extra fiber? Should you eat fish, and, if so, how often? Will eating soy foods prevent heart disease? My guess is that you're not really sure of the answers to these questions. If this is the case, then you aren't alone. Even though information and opinions are plentiful, very few people truly know what they should be doing to improve their health. This isn't because the research hasn't been done. It has. We know an enormous amount about the links between nutrition and health. But the real science has been buried beneath a clutter of irrelevant or even harmful information-junk science, fad diets and food industry propaganda.

[Ebook]Applying Psychology to Everyday Life - A Beginners Guide - sanraj - 26 Jan 2009 21:28

Applying Psychology to Everyday Life - A Beginners Guide

John Wiley & Sons | ISBN-13: 978-0-470-86988-8 | Author: Kenneth T. Strongman | English | PDF | 301 Pages | 2.73 MB

Preface
I began by wanting to write a book entitled something like Where Psychology Has Gone Wrong. The reason for this desire came from thinking that psychology is a far more interesting and stimulating subject than it would appear to be from a glance at some academic texts and journal articles. Also, many students begin their psychological studies with enthusiasm and then rapidly have to come to terms with the subject not being quite as they thought that it might be. Somehow, it all seems rather remote from everyday issues and problems, in fact, not to put too fi ne a point on it, rather remote from people and what they do. However, those close enough to me to receive my confi dences about the proposed book gently suggested that it seemed a hint negative. So, instead I thought of writing something not only about where psychology had lost its way, but also about more positive and interesting directions it had taken and where it might go more positively in the future. This still seemed somewhat negative. Finally,
then, came the idea of picking the eyes out of psychology, of amassing in one place all of those aspects of psychology which have been developed in an interesting and practically useful way. When it came to looking for them, then there they were. There was also the further consideration of identifying the potential readership. This was an easier problem. The book is intended generally for any person who wishes to fi nd out a little about psychology in a way that would be useful to them in their everyday world, be it at work or at home, when alone or in the company of others. The book is also intended specifi cally for any student who is required (or wishes) to study psychology for one year as part of some other training (teaching, medicine, paramedical services, police work, and so on). It will give them a reasonably thorough grounding in many (but not all) aspects of psychology, but will also ensure that this grounding occurs in the everyday world. In the end, this is not a didactic book. It has a much more practical set of aims – to be useful and stimulating and, above all, to communicate and engage. Psychology can be both surprising and fascinating. Returning to the point made at the start of this preface, I am now in a position of easily identifying those aspects of psychological research that (in my view) have been, let us say, less than riveting. They are simply all of those parts of psychology not included in Applying Psychology to Everyday Life, but the thought of writing a book about them is also less than riveting. This was the better way to do it.

[Ebook]Robot Builder's Cookbook Build and Design Your Own - sanraj - 26 Jan 2009 21:30

Robot Builder's Cookbook Build and Design Your Own

Elsevier Ltd. | ISBN: 978-0-7506-6556-8 | Author: Owen Bishop | English | PDF (RAR Compressed) | 373 Pages | 10.98 MB

About this book
This is a book of practical robotics written for beginners but also catering for those who have progressed a little further beyond that stage. It describes the mechanics of robot construction, how to build the electronic circuits, and finally goes into the details of programming robotic systems. The first half of the book is a cookbook of information, ideas, tips, and suggestions for the first-time roboticists and others. Much of the content will be of interest and practical use to students in Further and Higher Education who are working on a micro-controllerbased project (though not necessarily a robotic one). The second half of the book describes the designing, building and programming of five robots of varying degrees of complexity. The specifications are flexible and essential features are emphasised so that the designs are readily adaptable to whatever materials and parts the reader can obtain. Each description points the way to more advanced development of the project, resulting in a wide range of
fascinating and often unique robots. The programs are listed in the PICs MPASM assembler, which allows them to be modified, fine-tuned and extended. The listings are fully annotated and are accompanied by detailed flowcharts. These are intended to provide ample guidance for those who wish to program in one of the dialects of BASIC, or in the C language.

[Ebook]The Book of Revelation For Dummies - sanraj - 26 Jan 2009 21:33

The Book of Revelation For Dummies

Wiley Publishing, Inc. | ISBN: 978-0-470-04521-3 | Author: Larry R. Helyer,PhD, and Richard Wagner | English | PDF | 362 Pages | 4.25 MB

Introduction
Acommon cartoon theme involves a person wearing a sandwich sign or carrying a poster that proclaims, “Repent! The end is near!” What’s implied is that some sudden, violent event is just around the corner and that people need to brace themselves for whatever’s coming. And usually, the end that’s near involves something nasty, if not totally devastating. The idea of a dramatic and destructive end to the earth has been around for ages. It’s the stuff of some really great sci-fi movies, and a lot of the elements that go into these stories come right out of the Bible. In fact, terms such as repent and Antichrist and Armageddon are direct references to messages, characters, and events that make up the book of Revelation. When you examine these themes and images in the context of religion, faith, and biblical history, things get even more interesting. But the book of Revelation is no easy read. Some people, after slogging through Revelation, seem to suffer from what we call PTRRD: Post-Traumatic Revelation Reading
Disorder. Maybe you’ve had this experience. You start reading with a rush of enthusiasm, and all goes well through the first three chapters and their letters to the seven churches. Then things start to get hairy: visions from heaven, creatures with eyes covering their bodies, plagues, horses of different colors, angels everywhere. Seven seals are opened, seven trumpets are sounded, seven bowls are poured out, and things get really confusing. Throw in grapes of wrath, red dragons, giant hail, and something called the rapture, and, well, you get the idea. Lost becomes more than just the name of a television series — it’s the perfect descriptor of your mental state. Our intent is to help you avoid PTRRD. We act as your tour guides to help you navigate the amazing book of Revelation. Even if you can’t figure out every single detail, clues that open up large chunks of the text abound. We promise you’ll come away with a better understanding of what Revelation is about, as well as a ton of cool information that you can sprinkle into conversations and impress your friends!

[Ebook]Top 100 Careers for College Graduates - sanraj - 26 Jan 2009 21:35

Top 100 Careers for College Graduates

JIST Publishing, Inc. | ISBN-13: 978-1-59357-318-8 | Author: Michael Farr | English | PDF (RAR Compressed)| 433 Pages | 6.50 MB

Introduction
This book is about improving your life, not just about selecting a job. The career you choose will have an enormous impact on how you live your life.
While a huge amount of information is available on occupations, most people don’t know where to find accurate, reliable facts to help them make good career decisions—or they don’t take the time to look. Important choices such as what to do with your career or whether to get additional training or education deserve your time. If you are considering more training or education—whether additional coursework, a college degree, or an advanced degree—this book will help with solid information. Training or education beyond high school is now typically required to get better jobs, and the education and training needed for the jobs in this book vary enormously. This book is designed to give you facts to help you explore your options. A certain type of work or workplace may interest you as much as a certain type of job. If your interests and values lead you to work in healthcare, for example, you can do this in a variety of work environments, in a variety of industries, and in a variety of jobs. For this reason, I
suggest you begin exploring alternatives by following your interests and finding a career path that allows you to use your talents doing something you enjoy. Also, remember that money is not everything. The time you spend in career planning can pay off in higher earnings, but being satisfied with your work—and your life—is often more important than how much you earn. This book can help you find the work that suits you best.

[Ebook]The Natural Pet Food Cookbook - Healthful Recipes for Dogs and Cats - sanraj - 26 Jan 2009 21:36

The Natural Pet Food Cookbook - Healthful Recipes for Dogs and Cats

Wiley Publishing, Inc. | ISBN-13: 978-0-470-22530-1 | Author: Wendy Nan Rees | English | PDF | 130 Pages | 2.23 MB

Introduction
In the late 1960s and early ’70s, organic and all-natural foods were becoming commonplace in human diets. As we became more aware of what we were putting into our own bodies, it seemed only natural that we began to consider what we were feeding our pets. Little did I know that my first job, at the young age of 17, would shape the course of my life. My duties included taking care of the Goldstein family’s two girls and working four days a week at their Katonah, New York, store Lick Your Chops, one of the very first all-natural pet stores. Robert Goldstein was and still is a prominent veterinarian, now based in Westport, Connecticut. After 30 years in the holistic pet industry, Goldstein and his wife, Susan, remain pioneers in the field. Their book The Goldsteins’Wellness and Longevity has won numerous awards. What I learned in that summer of ’78 was the reason I started cooking for my pets. In 1985, I welcomed home my first puppy, a Chinese Shar-Pei. Six weeks later, he became very ill. Weeks of tests showed
that he was allergic to soy, salt, and preservatives. At the time I was in cooking school and newly married, but I thought, how hard could it be to create some food or at least a treat for my dog? To my surprise, learning the ins and outs took about 8 months; just figuring out how to make the treats crunchy without burning them was a challenge. Lip Smackers®, the people cookie made for dogs, was born, and so was my career in the pet industry. After graduating from cooking school, I started the company Lip Smackers and began applying everything I had learned while I worked for the Goldsteins. For example, they taught me that brewer’s yeast is wonderful for dogs; it helps bitter the blood to retard fleas. Since writing my first cookbook in 1991, I have been on a mission to teach people how to cook and care for their pets in a healthy, all-natural way, always keeping it easy, fun, safe, and practical. In 2007, for the first time we had a major pet food recall. This recall turned the industry upside down. Having lost confidence in pet food manufacturers, more and more pet parents are looking for healthy recipes that they can cook for their dogs and cats—like the recipes I have been creating since 1985. This book contains all-new, all-natural recipes. I have had the good fortune to work closely on this book with Kevin Schlanger, DVM, who is my own pets’ veterinarian. In addition to providing tips for you, Dr. Kevin has reviewed all the recipes in this book to make sure that they are safe for your pets.

From Genesis to Genetics - The Case of Evolution and Creationism

PREFACE
Of the three major conflicts between science and religion, two have already been settled. It is now generally accepted that the Earth is round, not flat, and that the Earth revolves around the sun, rather than the sun circling the Earth. The third major conflict concerns origins—the origins of the universe, the Earth, and all its living creatures. In Western culture until the middle of the nineteenth century the answer to the question of origins was divine creation as described in Genesis, the first book of the Judeo-Christian Bible. This explanation had satisfied most people in the West since the waning days of the Roman Empire. But in 1859, with the publication of Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, an alternative explanation for the origin of life’s diversity appeared, and this new view of life threw Western thought into a tailspin. Darwin proposed that the many different kinds of plants and animals we see around us have not been immutable since the beginning of time. Instead, they have changed
dramatically as the environment has changed, dividing again and again into new species that fill new niches, until—over vast periods of time—a huge number of different species has come into being. Darwin called this process evolution. The Origin immediately evoked an outcry in Darwin’s own Great Britain, as well as on the European continent and in the United States. Many people saw his radical theory as conflicting severely with the religious teachings of Genesis, as indeed it did—and still does. Divine creation is a supernatural concept that cannot be studied, proved, or disproved with the procedures of science. It is accepted on faith. In contrast, Darwin’s explanation for the diversity of life relied solely on natural processes, and therefore it could be tested, modified, and improved upon. As the nineteenth century progressed, more and more naturalists accepted evolution as an explanation for the great diversity of life because it cast so much light on a number of otherwise inexplicable puzzles in nature. Because naturalists study the life histories of plants and animals, it is not surprising that they were the first people to be persuaded by Mr. Darwin, a fellow naturalist. The various Christian denominations were much slower to appreciate his new theory, but by the second half of the twentieth century many of them also accepted evolution. And now, at the beginning of a new millennium, Pope John Paul II has decreed that evolution is consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Still, a very large number of fundamentalist Christians continue to reject the scientific evidence for evolution and accept as fact the literal account of creation as described in Genesis. The tension between creationists and evolutionists has waxed and waned over the decades since Darwin first proposed his “dangerous idea,” but it is once again severe. The arena of contention today is mainly the public schools. Scientists, supported by the nation’s courts, demand that teachers present evolution—and only evolution—as the accepted scientific explanation for the origin of life’s diversity. Creationists, on the other hand, demand that educators exclude evolution from the curriculum—but if educators must teach it, they should also be required to teach a competing theory, called creation science, as a “logical” alternative......................

Uncommon Sense

Capstone Publishing Limited | ISBN 1-84112-477-X | Author: Peter Cochrane | English | PDF (RAR Compressed) | 251 Pages | 5.09 MB

Standby
This is a book that expresses the unique view of Peter Cochrane who has watched, and been intimately engaged in, the technology roll-out over the landscape of society for decades. As an observer and commentator he has a great deal to say about the good, the bad and the ugly of the ever-increasing waves of technology deployment. Peter is anything but shy. He is refreshingly frank and honest, surprisingly accessible, and so is this book. It is a no-holds-barred presentation that will entertain, explain and challenge the layperson and the expert. Basically, this is a collection of essays from Peter that strips away the hype and mystery surrounding ‘conventional wisdom’, and exposes the realities and truths in the sense of ‘the emperor’s new clothes’. He sees, reaches, and extracts the essence of an issue, and presents the results in a clear and passionate fashion. Peter forces the reader to see, think, and re-evaluate many long-held opinions in a fresh and logical fashion. Uncommon Sense is, in Peter’s words, ‘… a book about living, rather than just surviving in a world of more technology and more change that our species has experienced hitherto.’ He expresses his thoughts in dramatic terms, making ample use of graphics and images to drive home his point; in many ways, the book is defi ned by his use of graphics and symbology. His goal is to set straight the confused thinking that surrounds much of the technology to which the end user has been subject. Peter has little patience for poor presentation of ideas and bemoans the ineptitude of most scientifi c presentations. He elaborates on the weakness of many of today’s management approaches, as well as on the failure of many technologies themselves. He points out that it is often a lack of imagination that limits the impact and effect of the information technology revolution. He properly recognizes that wireless communications and access will be omnipresent, and addresses some of the impediments that have been thrown up that have slowed down the deployment of a full
wireless infrastructure. Peter further points out the non-intuitive behaviour of exponential growth and how it has fooled so many bright people who fail to recognize its impact. He addresses the enormous complexity that is part of the technological and societal revolution by illustrating the true meaning of exponential growth, chaotic action, and counterintuitive outcomes. One of Peter’s pet peeves and frustrations is technology that fails to deliver what was promised. He is also irritated by managers who don’t understand that they don’t understand, and politicians who take a disastrously focused (single or limited issue) view in order to survive rather than improve things. His dialogue and illustrations take us through the causes of technology failure and the unlikeliness of it truly recovering. For example he cites and comments on hospital records, broadband, 3G, eShopping, the local loop and last mile as continuing to present nasty and, as yet, unsolved problems of effective deployment and delivery.
Peter’s holistic views address issues that span the important and vital through to the apparently trivial – for example the availability of pornography on the net, the futility of personal fi ling systems on a PC, and control freak managers. From a more global point of view, Peter makes the case that if we are to make any progress in solving the world’s critical problems, we must apply our advanced computer modelling capability to quantify the interaction between the variables, and predict the impact of these variables on the outcomes. He argues that the problems and their interactions are far too complex for the unaided human intellect to cope with, and this applies to the various summits that continue to meet, discuss, and fail to bring light to these issues. Peter recognizes that the world we are moving to in this 21st century is one of embedded technology, intelligent agents, mobile access, and vast, fast networks. In this world, he sees a need for clarity and vision. It can be a magnifi cent place to
live in, but it will not be without addressing the serious issues of privacy, security, intellectual property challenges and ethical issues. In this book you will be entertained, amazed, concerned, challenged and invigorated by the bright future that technology is offering. It will take uncommon sense and fresh thinking to truly tame this future and make the most of it. Enjoy!

[Ebook]The Art of Cooking The First Modern Cookery Book - sanraj - 2 Feb 2009 01:01

The Art of Cooking The First Modern Cookery Book

University of California Press, Ltd. | isbn 0-520-23271-2 | Author: Luigi Ballerini | English | PDF | 216 Pages | 1.26 MB

Introduction
Dear Reader: This is a cookbook—a historical cookery book. If you do not care to read about the world from which it grew (and it would be perfectly understandable if you didn’t), skip the present introduction altogether. No need to feel guilty about it. Read it only if you are the type that does not mind a little suªering. I promise that, at the end, you will hasten to search for a great chef, either in the outside world or within yourself, to obtain from either of them (or from both) the culinary reward you undoubtedly deserve. For a good number of years, a few centuries in fact, the only known mention of Maestro Martino was to be found in the writings of the fifteenth-century Italian humanist Bartolomeo Sacchi, who was acquainted with him personally. This means that the name of an unknown person was for a while on the lips and twice, at least, in the pen of a “reporter” who, in our day and age, is just as unknown as his “reportee.” The muse of history contributed some humor of its own. So enchanted was
Saccni (who in his own time was actually famous enough to need no introduction) with Martino’s gastronomic and rhetorical virtues that he did not hesitate to compare him to Carneades (213–129 b.c.e.), whom Sacchi’s contemporaries would have immediately recognized as the illustrious philosopher who headed the New Platonic Academy in Athens, and whose subtle eloquence and argumentative dexterity, appreciated and praised during that rebirth of classical culture we know as the Renaissance, would eventually fall into the same oblivion that now surrounds the cook no less than the scholar. There is more: ever since the hypertrophic question “Carneades, who was he now?” found its way into the pages of Alessandro Manzoni’s I promessi sposi (The Betrothed; first published in 1827), only to be repeated, generation after generation, by legions of high school kids, Italians have adopted the name Carneades as the quintessential moniker of obscurity.1 Thus, to make sure that fame would not treat Martino unfairly, Bartolomeo sacchi bestowed upon him the following encomium: “What a cook, O immortal gods, you bestowed in my friend Martino of Como, from whom I have received, in great part, the things of which I am writing. You would say he was another Carneades if you were to hear him eloquently speaking ex tempore about the matters described above.”2 Luckily, by the time the events in this story began to unfold, the printing press had become a permanent feature of European cultural life, with the result that Sacchi’s praise of Martino would be repeated a fair number of times, in the 1474 as well as in the numerous subsequent editions of his treatise De honesta voluptate et valetudine (On Right Pleasure and Good Health). But Sacchi’s treatise paid homage to Martino in a way that went beyond the exigency of a compliment, eventually yielding results that we are only beginning to appreciate more than five centuries later. By “lifting” the cook’s recipes and translating them into Latin, Sacchi ensured that the highly original approach
of Maestro Martino’s De arte coquinaria (The Art of Cooking ) would not remain confined to a few obscure manuscripts penned in the vernacular, but on the contrary would be disseminated throughout Renaissance Europe in the first cookbook deemed worthy of mechanical reproduction.3 To fully appreciate the novelty and impact of Martino’s gastronomy, we must situate him in time and place, studying the changes in culinary practice that his example helped to usher in. Given the paucity of historical information available about Martino himself, our study must be necessarily oblique. We begin with the prologue-master, Sacchi, about whom much was known though little is now remembered, and proceed from there to the leading man, about whom we now know a little more than we did a few decades ago, although certainly not enough to satisfy our appetite. Along the way, we will season the plot with accounts of supporting actors and extras (Renaissance popes and cardinals, for the most part, but even a twentieth-century
American gentleman), and with a register of motives that will surely pique the interest of those who love good food and the history and art of gastronomy.................................

Getting Things Done

Penguin Group | ISBN: 0 14 20.0028 0 | Author: David Allen, | English | PDF | 278 Pages | 2.13 MB

Welcome to Getting Things Done
WELCOME TO A gold mine of insights into strategies for how to have more energy, be more relaxed, and get a lot more accomplished with much less effort. If you're like me, you like getting things done and doing them well, and yet you also want to savor life in ways that seem increasingly elusive if not downright impossible if you're working too hard. This doesn't have to be an either-or proposition. It is possible to be effectively doing while you are delightfully being, in your ordinary workaday world. I think efficiency is a good thing. Maybe what you're doing is important, interesting, or useful; or maybe it isn't but it has to be done anyway. In the first case you want to get as much return as you can on your investment of time and energy. In the second, you want to get on to other things as fast as you can, without any nagging loose ends. And whatever you're doing, you'd probably like to be more relaxed, confident that whatever you're doing at the moment is just what you need to be doing—that having a
beer with your staff after hours, gazing at your sleeping child in his or her crib at midnight, answering the e-mail in front of you, or spending a few informal minutes with the potential new client after the meeting is exactly what you ought to be doing, as you're doing it. Teaching you how to be maximally efficient and relaxed, whenever you need or want to be, was my main purpose in writing this book....................

INTRODUCTION

A PHARMACIST’S PERSPECTIVE:The Power of Natural Medicine in Modern Health

The history of medicine is a fascinating story of the transition from ancient healing techniques to brilliant scientifi c and technological advances. We have gone from using medicine men and plant-based remedies to creating pharmaceutical drugs and sophisticated surgical procedures. Undoubtedly, medicine today now provides us with the ability to fi ght off deadly diseases and live longer lives; however, we must not forget that many solutions can still be found in nature. In fact, many of the prescription medications used today are derived from plants. As well, we must be aware that lifestyle factors—diet, activity level, sleep, and environment—play a critical role in health and disease prevention. In the last 20 years, we’ve witnessed a growing desire to look to natural remedies fi rst before taking prescription medications that may have drug interactions, side effects, and high costs. There is increasing interest in prevention for both minor and chronic health concerns and awareness of taking responsibility for one’s health. People are no longer satisfi ed with the idea of taking a pill to fi x their problems. They are starting to question the indiscriminate use of prescription drugs and the motivations behind the industry, and they are becoming better educated about their options. I have also witnessed a growing awareness among doctors, pharmacists, and other health care professionals in holistic therapies, but we still have a long way to go before mainstream medicine and natural medicine are fully integrated. And that’s where I come in. As a traditionally trained pharmacist with a complementary background in natural health, nutrition, and fi tness, my goal is to bridge the gap between the two worlds and in doing so, help people along their journey to optimal health.

Barack Obama - Dreams From My Father A Story Of Race And Inheritance

English | PDF | 236 Pages | 1.24 MB

INTRODUCTION
I ORIGINALLY INTENDED A VERY different book. The opportunity to write it first arose while I was still in law school, after my election as the first black president of the Harvard Law Review, a legal periodical largely unknown outside the profession. A burst of publicity followed that election, including several newspaper articles that testified less to my modest accomplishments than to Harvard Law School’s peculiar place in the American mythology, as well as America’s hunger for any optimistic sign from the racial front-a morsel of proof that, after all, some progress has been made. A few publishers called, and I, imagining myself to have something original to say about the current state of race relations, agreed to take off a year after graduation and put my thoughts to paper. In that last year of law school, I began to organize in my mind, with a frightening confidence, just how the book would proceed. There would be an essay on the limits of civil rights litigation in bringing about racial equality, thoughts on the meaning of community and the restoration of public life through grassroots organizing, musings on affirmative action and Afrocentrism-the list of topics filled an entire page. I’d include personal anecdotes, to be sure, and analyze the sources of certain recurring emotions. But all in all it was an intellectual journey that I imagined for myself, complete with maps and restpoints and a strict itinerary: the first section completed by March, the second submitted for revision in August…. When I actually sat down and began to write, though, I found my mind pulled toward rockier shores. First longings leapt up to brush my heart. Distant voices appeared, and ebbed, and then appeared again. I remembered the stories that my mother and her parents told me as a child, the stories of a family trying to explain itself. I recalled my first year as a community organizer in Chicago and my awkward steps toward manhood. I listened to my grandmother, sitting under a mango tree as she braided my sister’s hair, describing the father I had never truly known. Compared to this flood of memories, all my well-ordered theories seemed insubstantial and premature. Still, I strongly resisted the idea of offering up my past in a book, a past that left me feeling exposed, even slightly ashamed. Not because that past is particularly painful or perverse but because it speaks to those aspects of myself that resist conscious choice and that-on the surface, at least-contradict the world I now occupy. After all, I’m thirty-three now; I work as a lawyer active in the social and political life of Chicago, a town that’s accustomed to its racial wounds and prides itself on a certain lack of sentiment. If I’ve been able to fight off cynicism, I nevertheless like to think of myself as wise to the world, careful not to expect too much. And yet what strikes me most when I think about the story of my family is a running strain of innocence, an innocence that seems unimaginable, even by the measures of childhood. My wife’s cousin, only six years od, has already lost such innocence: A few weeks ago he reported to his parents that some of his first grade classmates had refused to play with him because of his dark, unblemished skin. Obviously his parents, born and raised in Chicago and Gary, lost their own innocence long ago, and although they aren’t bitter-the two of them being as strong and proud and resourceful as any parents I know-one hears the pain in their voices as they begin to have second thoughts about having moved out of the city into a mostly white suburb, a move they made to protect their son from the possibility of being caught in a gang shooting and the certainty of attending an underfunded school. They know too much, we have all seen too much, to take my parents’ brief union-a black man and white woman, an African and an American-at face value. As a result, some people have a hard time taking me at face value. When people who don’t know me well, black or white, discover my background (and it is usually a discovery, for I ceased to advertise my mother’s race at the age of twelve or thirteen, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites), I see the split-second adjustments they have to make, the searching of my eyes for some telltale sign. They no longer know who I am. Privately, they guess at my troubled heart, I suppose-the mixed blood, the divided soul, the ghostly image of the tragic mulatto trapped between two worlds. And if I were to explain that no, the tragedy is not mine, or at least not mine alone, it is yours, sons and daughters ..........................

Basic Engineering Mathematics

Butterworth-Heinemann | ISBN: 0750665750 | Author: John Bird, BSc(Hons), CMath, CEng, FIMA, MIEE, FIIE(Elec), FCollP | English | PDF | 301 Pages | 5.71 MB

Synopsis:
A wide range of courses have an intake that requires a basic, easy introduction to the key maths topics for engineering - Basic Engineering Mathematics is designed to fulfil that need. Unlike most engineering maths texts, this book does not assume a firm grasp of GCSE maths, yet unlike low-level general maths texts the content is tailored for the needs of engineers. The result is a unique text written for engineering students, but which takes a starting point below GCSE level. The textbook is therefore ideal for students of a wide range of abilities, and especially for those who find the theoretical side of mathematics difficult.

Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems for Engineers[Ebook] - sanraj - 9 Jun 2009 20:05

Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems for Engineers

CRC Press LLC | ISBN: 0849391253 | English | PDF | 254 Pages | Size: 3.65 MB

Introduction
Engineer utilise principles of science and mathematics to develop certain technologies. These technologies are then used to create engineered artifacts such as products, structures, machines, processes or entire systems. However, this is too abstract a definition for the engineer’s sphere of operation. It must be analysed in greater detail for an understanding of how engineers create the artifacts that improve the quality of life. When an engineer creates an artifact in any area of application, he has to employ a host of related activities like planning, conceptual design, analysis, detailing, drafting, construction, manufacturing and maintenance. Depending on the type of problem that is being addressed and the domain, different combinations and different sequences of these activities are undertaken. Right from the days of ENIAC, the first digital computer, computers have been extensively used by the engineering community to expedite or automate some of the numerous tasks. The history of the use of computer in engineering problems parallels the developments in computer hardware and software technology. Such developments have advanced at such an unbelievable pace in the past fifteen years that today’s desktop computers are far more capable than the mainframe computers of the last decade. Developments are not constrained to faster CPUs alone. The emergence of improved paradigms such as parallel and distributed computing, backed up by appropriate software environments, has virtually transformed the direction of research in computer usage in engineering. From the development of faster and faster algorithms, we have moved to developments for evolving improved methods of assistance. This has resulted in the transformation of computers from large numerical computing machines to aids to engineers at every stage of problem solving. Numerical computing-intensive tasks were the early applications attempted to be solved with the aid of computers in the early days of computer usage by the engineering community. Research in
the areas of computer graphics, database management systems and Artificial Intelligence (AI) along with the development of faster and more powerful hardware platforms accelerated and widened the use of computers for engineering problem solving. Computer graphics tools improved the visualisation capabilities, thereby making it possible for complete graphical simulation of many engineering processes. DataBase Management Systems (DBMS) provided engineers with necessary tools for handling and manipulating the large amount of data generated during processing in a systematic and efficient manner. Integration of spatial information handling and graphical presentation with DBMS provided a very powerful tool, viz., the Geographical Information System (GIS), which has really revolutionised computer-assisted execution of many tasks in many disciplines of engineering. Still, all these developments helped only numerical computing-intensive, data-intensive and visualisation-based problems. One of the major tasks in many of the activities mentioned earlier is decision making, which is required in different stages of execution of each of the tasks. Decision making requires processing of symbolic information in contrast to the conventional data processing, handling of facts and inference using domain knowledge. Inference is nothing but search through the knowledge base using the facts. The intensive research carried out in the area of AI in the last four decades resulted in the emergence of a number of useful techniques which can be used for solving many complex problems.

25 Days to Better Thinking and Better Living[Ebook] - sanraj - 9 Jun 2009 20:08

25 Days to Better Thinking and Better Living

Pearson Education, Inc. | ISBN 0-13-173859-3 | English | PDF | 378 Pages | Size: 1.03 MB

Introduction
“Thinking leads man to knowledge. He may see and hear, and read
and learn whatever he pleases, and as much as he pleases; he will
never know anything of it, except that which he has thought over,
that which by thinking he has made the property of his own mind.”
—Pestalozzi

There is nothing we do as humans that does not involve thinking. Our thinking tells us what to believe, what to reject, what is important, what is unimportant, what is true, what is false, who are our friends, who are our enemies, how we should spend our time, what jobs we should pursue, where we should live, who we should marry, how we should parent. Everything we know, believe, want, fear, and hope for, our thinking tells us. It follows, then, that the quality of our thinking is the primary determinant of the quality of our lives. It has implications for how we go about doing literally everything we do. The quality of your work is determined by the quality of your thinking as you reason through the problems you face as you work. The quality of your relationships is determined by the thinking you do about and in those relationships. Right now, as you read this book, the very sense you make of it is a product of your thinking. Your ability to understand and internalize the ideas it contains will be determined by the quality of your thinking as you read it.
Therefore, learning to think at the highest level of quality, or to think critically, is too important to leave to chance. Critical thinking is the disciplined art of ensuring that you use the best thinking you are capable of in any set of circumstances. Through developed critical capacities, you can take command of the thinking that commands you. No matter what your circumstance or goals, no matter where you are or what problems you face, you are better off if you are in control of your thinking. Identity Theft Handbook - Detection, Prevention and Security 2009

John Wiley & Sons, Inc. | ISBN 978-0-470-17999-4 | English | PDF | 129 Pages | Size: 2.14 MB

Introduction
This is the book that I have always wanted to write. In fact, I have been preparing for it for 30 years, since my early days investigating mail theft and credit card fraud. ‘‘Identity theft’’ was not even a term then. That would come in the 1990s. The crime had many names, but it was always the same. Identity theft was and is an evil with a life of its own. It has grown from just an American problem into a worldwide epidemic that shows no
signs of ending.
My first experience with identity theft was in 1978, when I was a newly hired United States Postal Inspector in the New York metropolitan area. I heard other inspectors tell stories of fraudulent credit card applications and the resulting credit card frauds, the ease of obtaining personal information and phony identification to perpetrate this crime, how foreign nationals were behind many of the schemes, and how much money the banks and growing credit card industry were losing. It seemed like such a simple crime to commit. By 1981, I was assigned to a team of federal agents investigating mail theft involving credit cards, checks, and other valuables sent through the mail. I saw firsthand how identity theft occurred and how easy it was to perpetrate. It still would be years before the crime would get the name ‘‘identity theft.’’ At the time we called it credit card fraud, fraud apps (for credit card application fraud), true name fraud, and the Crime of the ’80s. As I investigated case after case, I came to the realization that this was not just any typical fraud.
Back then there were not many in law enforcement involved in fighting this crime. As the epidemic grew, more and more federal, state, and local law enforcement agents would learn about and start investigations into identity theft. Even though we were making arrest after arrest of defendants involved in this crime, other fraudsters just took their places. It felt like we were fighting a losing battle. We realized that prevention needed to be embraced and evangelized to the public as well as the financial services industry. Perhaps education and awareness could stem the tide. By the mid-1980s, other agents and I were speaking about the growing problem to anyone who would listen but especially to law enforcement, credit card and bank investigators, and the media. I said things like ‘‘It’s a major problem throughout the country; the problem is growing so much that it is overwhelming law enforcement agencies; cooperation between banks, credit bureaus and law enforcement is essential to address the problem; and
it’s a growing problem and can destroy the credit industry as we know it if we don’t stop it.’’ I made these comments on a 1985 video for the TransUnion credit bureau to show to its employees, financial services employees, and law enforcement. The video was titled Crime of the 80s.
In September 1986, I had the honor of testifying before the United States Senate about emerging criminal groups, credit card fraud, and the phony identification used to perpetrate this crime. Nowhere in the hearings transcript is the phrase ‘‘identity theft’’ but every person there was describing it as they spoke. In writing this book, I looked at my testimony and was struck by something I said. Asked about the impact on victims, I responded:

Basically, it is a horror story for the individual. The banks assume the losses so the individual does not have to pay the losses out of his pocket, but the real problem is the effect on the individual’s credit rating. . . . I know of cases where the people, a year or two after the fraud, and after they have contacted the credit bureaus to clear up their name, they still have problems getting credit, including credit cards, mortgages, and other loans.

Springer Science+Business Media, Inc. | ISBN 0-387-21017-2 | English | PDF | 387 Pages | Size: 1.31 MB

Introduction
[i]We start this chapter with an overview of what this book is about. As programmers we usually write our programs in a high-level language such as Java. However, such languages shield us from the system’s internal details. Because we want to explore the RISC architectures, it is best done by knowing the processor’s language. That’s why we look at the assembly language in the later chapters of the book.[i]

Processor Architecture
Computers are complex systems. How do we manage complexity of these systems? We can get clues by looking at how we manage complex systems in life. Think of how a large corporation is managed. We use a hierarchical structure to simplify the management: president at the top and workers at the bottom. Each level of management filters out unnecessary details on the lower levels and presents only an abstracted version to the higher-level management. This is what we refer to as abstraction. We study computer systems by using layers of abstraction. Different people view computer systems differently depending on the type of their interaction. We use the concept of abstraction to look at only the details that are necessary from a particular viewpoint. For example, a computer user interacts with the system through an application program. For the user, the application is the computer! Suppose you are interested in browsing the Internet. Your obvious choice is to interact with the system through a Web browser such as the Netscape™ Communicator or Internet Explorer. On the other hand, if you are a computer architect, you are interested in the internal details that do not interest a normal user of the system. One can look at computer systems from several different perspectives. Our interest in this book is in looking at processor architectural details. A programmer’s view of a computer system depends on the type and level of language she intends to use. From the programmer’s viewpoint, there exists a hierarchy from lowlevel languages to high-level languages (see Figure 1.1). As we move up in this hierarchy,

Java Puzzlers - Traps, Pitfalls, And Corner Cases

Addison Wesley Professional | ISBN: 0-321-33678-X | English | CHM | 304 Pages | Size: 1.24 MB

Introduction
This book is filled with brainteasers about the Java programming language and its core libraries. Anyone with a working knowledge of Java can understand these puzzles, but many of them are tough enough to challenge even the most experienced programmer. Don't feel bad if you can't solve them. They are grouped loosely according to the features they use, but don't assume that the trick to a puzzle is related to its chapter heading; we reserve the right to mislead you.
Most of the puzzles exploit counterintuitive or obscure behaviors that can lead to bugs. These behaviors are known as traps, pitfalls, and corner cases. Every platform has them, but Java has far fewer than other platforms of comparable power. The goal of the book is to entertain you with puzzles while teaching you to avoid the underlying traps and pitfalls. By working through the puzzles, you will become less likely to fall prey to these dangers in your code and more likely to spot them in code that you are reviewing or revising.
This book is meant to be read with a computer at your side. To get the most out of the puzzles, you'll need a Java development environment, such as Sun's JDK [JDK-5.0]. It should support release 5.0, as some of the puzzles rely on features introduced in this release. You can download the source code for the puzzles from http://www.javapuzzlers.com. Unless you're a glutton for punishment, we recommend that you do this before solving the puzzles. It's a heck of a lot easier than typing them in yourself.
Most of the puzzles take the form of a short program that appears to do one thing but actually does something else. It's your job to figure out what the program does. To get the most out of these puzzles, we recommend that you take this approach:

1.Study the program and try to predict its behavior without using a computer. If you don't see a trick, keep looking.
2.Once you think you know what the program does, run it. Did it do what you thought it would? If not, can you come up with an explanation for the behavior you observed?
3.Think about how you might fix the program, assuming it is broken.
3.Then and only then, read the solution.

Robotics[Ebook] - sanraj - 9 Jun 2009 20:17

Robotics

English | PDF | 116 Pages | Size: 1.55 MB

Introduction
The word “robot” was introduced by the Czech playright Karel ? Capek in his 1920 play Rossum’s Universal Robots.
The word “robota” in Czech means simply “work.” In spite of such practical beginnings, science fiction writers and early Hollywood movies have given us a romantic notion of robots. Thus, in the 1960s robots held out great promises for miraculously revolutionizing industry overnight. In fact, many of the more far-fetched expectations from robots have failed to materialize. For instance, in underwater assembly and oil mining, teleoperated robots are very difficult to manipulate and have largely been replaced or augmented by “smart” quick-fit couplings that simplify the assembly task. However, through good design practices and painstaking attention to detail, engineers have succeeded in applying robotic systems to a wide variety of industrial and manufacturing situations where the environment is structured or predictable. Today, through developments in computers and artificial intelligence techniques and often motivated by the space program, we are on the verge of another breakthrough in robotics that will afford some levels of autonomy in unstructured environments.
On a practical level, robots are distinguished from other electromechanical motion equipment by their dexterous manipulation capability in that robots can work, position, and move tools and other objects with far greater dexterity than other machines found in the factory. Process robot systems are functional components with grippers, end effectors, sensors, and process equipment organized to perform a controlled sequence of tasks to execute a process — they require sophisticated control systems.
The first successful commercial implementation of process robotics was in the U.S. automobile industry. The word “automation” was coined in the 1940s at Ford Motor Company, as a contraction of “automatic motivation.” By 1985 thousands of spot welding, machine loading, and material handling applications were working reliably. It is no longer possible to mass produce automobiles while meeting currently accepted quality and cost levels without using robots. By the beginning of 1995 there were over 25,000 robots in use in the U.S. automobile industry. More are applied to spot welding than any other process. For all applications and industries, the world’s stock of robots is expected to exceed 1,000,000 units by 1999.
The single most important factor in robot technology development to date has been the use of microprocessor-based control. By 1975 microprocessor controllers for robots made programming and executing coordinated motion of complex multiple degrees-of-freedom (DOF) robots practical and reliable. The robot industry experienced rapid growth and humans were replaced in several manufacturing processes requiring tool and/or workpiece manipulation. As a result the immediate and cumulative dangers of exposure of workers to manipulation-related hazards once accepted as necessary costs have been removed.
A distinguishing feature of robotics is its multidisciplinary nature — to successfully design robotic systems one must have a grasp of electrical, mechanical, industrial, and computer engineering, as well as economics and business practices. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a background in all these areas so that design for robotic applications may be confronted from a position of insight and confidence. The material covered here falls into two broad areas: function and analysis of the single robot, and design and analysis of robot-based systems and workcells. Section 14.2 presents the available configurations of commercial robot manipulators, with Section 14.3 providing a follow-on in mathematical terms of basic robot geometric issues. The next four sections provide particulars in end-effectors and tooling, sensors and actuators, robot programming languages, and dynamics and real-time control. Section 14.8 deals with planning and intelligent control. The next three sections cover the design of
robotic systems for manufacturing and material handling. Specifically, Section 14.9 covers workcell layout and part feeding, Section 14.10 covers product design and economic analysis, and Section 14.11 deals with manufacturing and industrial processes. The final section deals with some special classes of robots including mobile robots, lightweight flexible arms, and the versatile parallel-link arms including the Stewart platform.

Buat yg Suka Linux

Ian Haycox, "Linux Email, 2nd Edition"
November 2009 | English | ISBN-13: 978-1-847198-64-8 | 376 Pages | PDF | 5.51 MB

Many businesses want to run their email servers on Linux for greater control and flexibility of corporate communications, but getting started can be complicated. The attractiveness of a free-to-use and robust email service running on Linux can be undermined by the apparent technical challenges involved. Some of the complexity arises from the fact that an email server consists of several components that must be installed and configured separately, then integrated together.

This book gives you just what you need to know to set up and maintain an email server. Unlike other approaches that deal with one component at a time, this book delivers a step-by-step approach across all the server components, leaving you with a complete working email server for your small business network.

Starting with a discussion on why you should even consider hosting your own email server, the book covers setting up the mail server. We then move on to look at providing web access, so that users can access their email out of the office. After this we look at the features you'll want to add to improve email productivity: virus protection, spam detection, and automatic email processing. Finally we look at an essential maintenance task: backups.

Written by professional Linux administrators, the book is aimed at technically confident users and new and part-time system administrators. The emphasis is on simple, practical and reliable guidance.

Based entirely on free, Open Source software, this book will show you how to set up and manage your email server easily.
